How do you record a bass guitar on your computer?

If you're new to Recording, I recommend you use the sound recorder mentioned below. Otherwise, go to "audacity.sourceforge.net". It is called Audacity and it is has far better quality recording than the built in program. It is pretty simple and it has unlimited recording time. Also, it can save recordings to mp3, WAV and OGG instead of just WAV. click on start, all programs, accessories, entertainment, sound recorder and play yer guitar its as simple as that limited time though, or look at real player it has a recording facility as well, hope this helps get things rolling well, what i do, is i have a recording device( logitech webcam....i know, that sucks, but it still does for now, i can get some pretty clean and clear sounds, even with distortion)...and it also helps to have a recording software if you want to record more then one guitar or bass by, well, recording one thing at a time and playing it at the same time....i use audacity, u can fix up your sound once recorded and add effects and such...you can even directly plugyour guitar into the input on the back of your p.c.....but that requires a pre-amp Take one piece of recording software (ie, Cubase, Logic, ProTools), take one pre-amp or mixer, take one computer. Connect the bass to the pre-amp, connect the pre-amp to the computer's input. Make sure the software registers the inputted device. Play. Record. um yeah, to have a good recording, you need a driver, like an MBOX or audiophile, guitar center has em. or if youre cheapo, buy guitarport, its only $99

A computer's "microphone" input should be able to accept the signal from a Bass Guitar. The only problem is adapting the 1/4" mono plug to the 1/8" stereo jack. For that, use the Radio Shack 1/8" mono-to-stereo adapter (274-374) to plug into the computer, then use the Radio Shack 1/4" jack to 1/8" plug mono adapter (274-870) to plug into that. Then you can plug in your bass.

If you use the 274-870 by itself, you will get bass to come through one channel only, which may be sufficient, as using 2 adapters may cause the connection to be noisy or loose.

Another option which will reduce the stain on your microphone input jack from all of that weight of the 2 adapters and the phone plug from your bass cable is to use the Radio Shack 1/8" to 1/4" headphone extension cable (42-2561), and plug into that a 1/4" mono to stereo adapter (274-1520). Be careful not to play the bass too loudly or you may damage your subwoofer.

If you want to be able to hear your bass and your computer through headphones, here is what you need:

1) computer

2) headphones

3) bass guitar

4) VOX bass headphone amp

5) eighth inch male-male chord (like a headphone chord but with two male ends)

Plug the VOX headphone amp into your bass, plug your headphones into your VOX headphone amp, and connect your computer and your VOX headphone amp with the eighth-inch male-male chord.
