You can buy "radio removal tools" from a parts store. They look like big steel U's that fit into the holes on either side of the radio face. By putting these tools into those holes, clips are disengaged and the radio can be removed...
You can also use wire coat hangers to make the tool yourself just bend a u shape in the wire and shove them into the holes on the sides of the Head Unit
To remove the factory stereo on 1996 dodge ram 1500 you need to pop the hood on the Ram and remove the ashtray. Slide the stereo out of the dash and unplug the cables from the back of the stereo.
Take it to a stereo shop, even those guys says its a bugger to get them out so its best left to a pro

On my 1996 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme it was very easy to remove the stereo. The entire plastic molding piece that surrounds the stereo as well as covers the speedometer is attached by some push clips and can be simply pulled off, no screws. Once the plastic surrounding is removed there will be 2 screws holding the stereo in place. Remove the 2 screws and pull the stereo out. Unplug the wire harness and antenna.
