How do you replace the bulb on the steering wheel radio controls on a 1997 Ford Explorer?

There is no replaceable bulb in the illuminated switches on a steering wheel. There is no room inside the button for a bulb, and such a bulb would create so much heat, that it would melt the assembly The illumination LED is integrated into the switch circuitry. The only way to fix it is to relace the switch assembly.

∙ 14y agoif your airbag light is on and your horn doesn't work you most likely would have to change your clock spring for your airbag .then your speed control, horn and radio will work and the air bag light will go off.

∙ 16y agoYou need to buy and replace the switch. The switch is removed bu using a small flathead screwdirver, and simply prying it out of its hole on the steering wheel. Disconnect the wires, connect to the new switch and replace the switch in it's hole.

∙ 16y agoyou can go to Walmart and buy a tool that is designed to go into the holes of the radio and release it and then while you're there you can buy the harness and speaker wire

I recently replaced the factory radio in my 1999 EB Explorer and, while the new radio had a CD player in it, I lost the use of the 6 CD changer in the armrest. Also, if you have steering wheel controls or rear seat controls, you may need to also install an add on, assuming the radio has an infrared remote control, to enable these controls. I also did this and it works reasonably well.I used Crutchfield and they are very helpful in answering questions you may have - you should try that also.bntdcarr@comcast.net

Go to Crutchfield.com and use the outfit my vehicle feature, if there is an interface available to adapt the steering wheel controls it would be there, also if you buy the head unit there the wiring harness adapter and dash kit are free so no cutting into the factory wiring. If it is too confusing use the phone number for a consultant and they will find what you need.

The steering wheel controls are probably bad The only fuse is the radio fuse and if the radio works the fuse is OK Also if you do not have the original stereo, and your new stereo does not have a place to plug in those controls they will not work.

It doesn't control anything. It is the connection for the cruise switches, horn switch, radio controls(if equipped) and airbag that allow the steering wheel to turn and there to still be a connection.

If the steering wheel has radio controls on the wheel, there could be a problem in the wiring. When the wires connect electrically it will cause stations to change.
