This applies to all PC and laptop computers.

It depends if your laptop came with a full version of the Windows disk, or if it was only a recovery disk that restored Windows from a hidden partition on the hard drive originally supplied with your computer.

Computers that are only supplied with a recovery disk rely on having the Windows installation files available on the hard disk that came with the PC, so if you get a new hard disk drive those files are obviously gone and you will need a replacement installation disk. The manufacturer or supplier of your PC may be able to help with this so it may be worth contacting them first. Or, if you download a copy of Windows, you can still use the serial number supplied with your computer. Make sure you get the correct version.

If you already own a legal serial number/license key, the Windows 7 file can be found here:

Windows 7 Home Premium x86 with SP1 (bootable)

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with SP1 (bootable)
http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-24209.iso

Warning: Each file size is 2.5 - 3 GB approx. so if your download bandwidth is finite then beware going over your monthly limit.

These disk images require burning to disk. Follow this Microsoft guide to learn how to burn an ISO disk image to a DVD.

You could also install the Windows 7 files from a USB device such as memory stick or external hard drive. Microsoft have a free tool to put the necessary Windows files from the ISO file onto the device. It is available here:

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

If you have the full Windows DVD available already then you can use that, or you can install any other operating system you like so long as you have the disk for it.

An example of another operating system might be MINT Linux.
