I was born in Ireland and live here, and not one person speaks it. Children only have to learn Irish in school as a second language. I personally hate it. Anyway, Hello is Dia Duit. Pronounced, Dee-a-gwit,

We speak English here, generally, so "Hello", "Hi", "How are you?" etc. would all be commonly used. There are a few places where Irish is the first language and there the greeting would be Dia dhuit (dee-a gh-witch [the 'gh' as in ghost] would be a close pronunciation). This translates as "God be with you". The 'correct' response is "Dia is Mhuire dhuit", (God and Mary be with you.)

English is the main language spoken there, so you would just say hello.

In the Irish language you could say:

  • Dia duit! Conas atá tú? (speaking to one person).
  • Dia dhaoibh! Conas atá tú? (speaking to more than one person). This means "Good day, how are you?"
