The built in microphone on a Mac should be ready to go. You can adjust the settings for the microphone by opening System Preferences, selecting the Sound option and then the Input button. Ensure that the Internal microphone is selected from the Device list and adjust the Input volume as required.

The built in webcam is already set up on a Mac when you purchase it. A quick test to see if it's working would be to click on "Photo Booth" in the applications folder, you can use that to snap a picture or take a video with your webcam.

It will be used as required by the iChat software or you can record directly into iMovie or Quicktime.

Go to System Preferences (usually towards the left of your dock) and then click on the Sound category under Hardware. Then go to Input and adjust the Input volume.
