It is believed that if you spray ammonia on the dirt of your garden a cat will not mess there. (Taken from the home remedies book). Get a spray bottle with vinegar in it and regularly hit certain spots in the garden or flower beds with it. Cats detest the pungent odor. Another option: If the cats are using a specific flower bed, try using a mulch of sharp pine boughs. I have also used chicken wire over an area where a cat was defecating, to keep it from using that area as a litter box. For both the evergreen needles and the chicken wire are uncomfortable for the cat's paws. Get a Jack Russel terrier.

Cats hate citrus fruits. If you just spread any orange, grapefruit, lime, tangerine, lemon etc. etc. peel around the garden, they will back off. You can also get cat pepper to sprinkle around the garden. Even better, you can buy an inexpensive proximity alarm that gives out a sound to keep the cat away, but is almost inaudible to humans. There is also a cat model you can buy to tether to your garden, which also helps to stop the cat pooping on your lawn or garden. Best bet is to go to your local garden centre. None of these things will hurt your garden or the cat. If you kill a cat on purpose by the way, it is an offence.

There are products that can be used to deter cats from wanting to come near the garden. If your preference is a home remedy, cats usually don't like citrus fruit rinds and mint. You could spread rinds throughout the garden, or plant some mint within your garden to deter them.

Male human urine at strategic points around a territory has been known to deter foxes from spending too long in it. The urine of other dominant predators may have the same effect.

How do you get cats out your garden?

I am not so sure. Cats tend to come in back gardens if foxes are there because they are known to scavenge for the fox's food's leftovers, that is one out of a few easy ways cats get food. Cats that come in your garden can be stray or domestic, stray cats normally tend to come in gardens more than domestic because stray cats hardly get fed by people but domestic cats that have good, caring owners get fed twice a day. Try and get the foxes out of your garden; the cats might follow them. If it is your own cats, you could make sure they are getting fed enough.
