Some preventative measures that can be taken to prevent a dog fight or to break on up easily is to keep the dogs leashed on if they were just introduced. If there are two dogs that are fighting, DO NOT try to get in between them. Instead, spray them with water from a hose. This will startle them enough to where they will break apart and you will have enough time to grab the dogs.

I have 2 Golden Retrievers (both sisters) who fight with each other every so often, so we frequently have to separate them. The best thing to do is spray them with a hose (in the face area) to either get them to stop completely or at least pause long enough for you to yell at them and split them apart. Do not use your hands or feet to break them apart, because one of them may bite you by accident. If you can't get them to stop with a hose, try use a big object to split them apart such as a broom or bat (wedge it between them both). If that doesn't work, try taking the wooden end of the broom and hitting the point where one dog has a hold of another (their snout) lightly, slowing increasing the amount of force used. I recommend a plastic bat that you can manuever easily, but be sure that you do not hit the dog that is being attacked and on defense at the time. Be very careful when trying to break them up with a hard/heavy object, as you are trying to stop the dogs from fighting rather than hurt them even more by hitting them. The best thing to do while breaking them apart is yell at them, saying things like "Hey!" or "Stop that!". Do not yell out their names though because saying their names should only be at a time when you are rewarding them, never say their names as you punish them.
