Count the segments on their abdomen. If the abdomen has 6 segments, it's a female. If it has 8, is a male.
Females also have wider abdomens than males.
The colors do not matter. The color only helps determine what species it is.
The way you tell a female mantis from a male is that the male's have wings and the females do not. Actually they both do have wings, but the female is usually too fat to fly, especially when they are adults and she has her belly full of eggs. Usually the males have 8 segments to their abdomens and the females have 6, the wings usually are different in male and female too, the females wings usually cover the whole of her abdomen :)
Look at it's segments under it's andomen including the one slightly covered by its's legs. 6-7 segments and it's a female, 8 and it's a male. Any more questions can be sent to tehsleepingfan@aim.com

Funny question! Praying mantis, try spelling it like Preying mantis. Preying means waiting to catch prey. Thus making it a carnivore. ~Amythefairy
