you need to take the dog to your vet asap. Chihuahuas die easly. if your dog is a puppy that you purchased from a petstore or breeder recently there is a GOOD chance it is sick. needs vet care now. Serena Chihuahua & Toy Breed Rescue www.crar.org

Lot's of tender loving care. As you know, they love the attention. It's usually not serious but sometimes it's an indicator of something else going on.

What you can do is monitor his/her temp, fluid intake, and food. Temp and fluid are the most important. If you haven't worked it out before you're not going to like this much and chances are your pet won't either. Take his/her temp rectally AND take it from your pet's ear.

Rectually: Get a doggie thermometer. Shake the thermometer, flick it downwards until it reads 94% or lower then, insert it carefully into it's rectum (about an inch), wait about two minutes and remove. Established norms are about 100.5 to 102.5

Take the temp from his/her ear. I've trained dogs 30+ years and use the pet-temp thermometer for dogs and cats (that's not an endorsement, it's just what I use). Norms are about 100.0 - 103. It takes a little practice, but the thermometer needs to be placed fairly deeply into the ear canal -- be careful not to insert it too deeply and damage the ear nor too shallowly so your reading is inaccurate.

You need to establish your own norms, pets (like people) run a bit higher or lower. Once you know your pet's norms, the ear thermometer is the way to go. This note assumes the pet is sick and you don't know. Otherwise, just get the ear thermometer before there's a problem and check 'em a few times and you've got your norms.

In my opinion as a trainer, and I'm not a Vet, if the ear temp is 99 or below or above 104, contact your primary Vet, now, or get your pet to an emergency treatment facility. I'd rather pay the bill than lose a pet. A high temp reflects infection (or sometimes a heart condition) but a low one can be as bad indicating shock. Both need to be attended to promptly -- as in as soon as possible.

At the training kennel we keep the appropriate meds, it would be highly unusual (virtually unheard of if you're not working with multiple dogs -- we're working with about 20 at any one time) if you had the drugs at home. So, it may be a pricey trip if you have to make it in the middle of the night. Be prepared, get your norms ahead of time, so you can deal with your usual Vet during regular office hours.

That's how we manage our puppies. Unfortunately, they can't tell us what's going on and chicken soup won't do ...
