There isn't a great deal you can do, except provide comfort, and to ensure she is eating. Being in heat is a stressful time, so some cats do not eat for the duration. Make sure there is no way for her to escape outside, and is ideal to get her spayed after her heat has finished.

A cat in heat will become much more affectionate with everything she comes across, she will howl an call day and night and will attempt to escape outside at every opportunity she sees in order to find a mate. She will often present her rear end and keep the front half of her body close to the ground, and tread with her back feet. Females cats in heat will also spray vertical surfaces in the house in order to attract a mate.

You can't, not permanently. Breeding a cat will only stop the heat cycles temporarily, and will start again once the kittens are weaned. Allowing a cat to repeatedly become pregnant, or to even keep her having heat cycles puts a great deal of strain on the cat's health - in both cases all the cat's energies are focused on attracting a male or her offspring. A cat left like this can become starved and very weak.

There are hormone treatments that are available, but these are only for short-term use. It is highly recommended that you spay your cat.

National euthanasia statistics are difficult to pinpoint because animal care and control agencies are not uniformly required to keep statistics on the number of animals taken in, adopted, euthanized, or reclaimed. While many shelters know the value of keeping statistics, no national reporting structure exists to make compiling national statistics on these figures possible. However, American Humane is one of the founding members of the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy. The mission of the National Council is to gather and analyze reliable data that further characterize the number, origin, and disposition of pets (dogs and cats) in the United States; to promote responsible stewardship of these companion animals; and based on the data gathered, to recommend programs to reduce the number of surplus/unwanted pets in the United States. The most recent statistics that the Council has published are from 1997, however only 1,000 shelters replied to the survey. Using the National Council's numbers from 1997 and estimating the number of operating shelters in the United States to be 3,500 (the exact number of animal shelters operating in the United States does not exist), here are the statistics: * Of the 1,000 shelters that replied to the National Council's survey, 4.3 million animals were handled. * In 1997 roughly 64% of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized -- approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters. These animals may have been put down due to overcrowding, but may have been sick, aggressive, injured, or suffered something else. * 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification. * Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. * 25% of dogs and 24% of cats that enter animal shelters are adopted. It is from these numbers that we estimated what is occurring nationwide. It is widely accepted that 9.6 million animals are euthanized annually in the United States. For more information on the studies done by the National Council, please visit www.petpopulation.org. == American Humane believes that all dogs and cats adopted from public or private animal care and control agencies must be sterilized before being allowed to leave the shelter and supports passage of state laws mandating this practice. American Humane supports the establishment and operation of low-cost spay/neuter clinics. The reduction in cost motivates those who cannot and those who will not pay the full cost for the operation and has proven successful in reducing euthanasia rates in communities across the nation. American Humane believes the percentage of animals reunited with their owners would greatly increase if more pets were properly identified. * Be sure your pet wears an identification tag, rabies license, and city license. Include your name, address, phone number, and pet's name. * Keep licenses current as they help shelters locate pet owners. If you are willing to pay a reward, put it on the tag. * When moving, put a temporary tag on your pet. Include a phone number of someone who will know how to reach you. * Don't assume that your indoor pet doesn't need tags. Many strays in shelters are indoor pets that escaped. * Purchase special cat collars with elastic bands to protect your cat from being caught in trees or on fences. * In addition to ID tags, consider getting your pet tattooed or microchipped.

The best thing to do is spay her. However, if this is not possible (some vets will not spay a cat in heat), there isn't much you can do. She will probably want a lot of attention and affection, and it is highly advisable that she is kept away from any doors that lead outside - females in call will do anything to get outside to find a mate.

You could try purchasing a Feliway plugin. This releases special pheromones into the air which can be very effective in helping calm a cat.

ANSWER:

When a female cat or female dog is in the biological process of being in heat. Unless you want your pet to have babies, you should keep them away from any males (cats or dogs), until the process ends for the female, and when she no longer has the need for sexual attention from the male.

You can get her spayed and if you dont have the money for that make sure to keep her inside. It will most likely be more money for a litter of kittens!

Why does a female cat go into heat after being sprayed by a male cat?

Whether that is the reason or not, is indefinite. However, the male has hormones in his urine that the female cat responds to, and these could trigger her mating response. no, don't they sniff each other out? The female emits pheromones when she is in heat that the male cat responds to. So the order is, the female is in heat and THEN the male sprays to mark territory.

Does separating the female cat from the male cat bring her out of heat faster?

No it does not. Basically the female cat will stay in heat until she is bred and pregnant. That is why you need to spay her as soon as possible. Other animals such as the dog have a set length of time for their heat cycle such as 2-3 weeks and then they are out of heat but a cat when she comes into heat, stays in heat until she is pregnant. Spay her! Good luck.
