You need to connect your iPhone to the computer you authorised, when first setting up your iPhone. When you connect your iPhone, either iTunes should open automatically or you will need to open it manually. You will see half way down the page, your device is shown highlight it by clicking on it, then the sync screen will display. On that first page, there is an option to check for updates. Click on this and your computer will connect to iTunes to see if updates are available, if so you will be asked to update your device. Some anti virus software needs disabled during this process as it can block the update and you are sometimes not aware of this until the update has tried to download which can take some time if it's an operating system update.
plug your iphone into your computer and go into itunes click on your phone under devices go to summary and press check for update or update iphone.

The update 6.1.6 helps to maintain the working efficiency for the iphone 3gs.
I don't believe the iPhone 3G can update past 4.2.1, but any newer iPhone can update the same way you normally update an iPhone through your iTunes authorized computer.
Considering updating your iPhone forces you to update to the latest software available for the device, updating an iPhone 3GS now will update it to iOS 6.
i dont think so, the latest update available for iphone 3g is 4.2.2 .
