8 stone on a crafting table; one on each border square.
First craft a crafting table in your 2x2 crafting area
Then use the crafting table and put 8 cobble on the edges of the crafting area with nothing in the middle
this should give you a furnace
Simply mine 8 pieces of stone to receive 8 pieces of cobblestone, craft a crafting table with 4 wooden planks if you haven't, select the crafting table, and the furnace should be listed in the topmost button's list if you collected all 8 cobblestone.
craft it by putting cobblestone in every spot in a crafting table except the middle and then place it somewhere, right click on it and you will see three boxes the top one is what your smelting/cooking and the bottom is what powers it, coal is usually used for this, the last box on the right is what you will get after this process and the arrow will show you how close you are to finishing the smelting/cooking.
You need 8 cobblestone and the diagram below shows how to place it.
You have to craft it on a workbench.

By putting sand in the furnace (not the fuel slot) and smelting it to make glass. You can place glass but beware you break it and you can't get it back unlike many other blocks.
