A pottery wheel is a round rotating plate generally waist high in a seated position, it can be motor operated or foot propelled. foot operated is just 2 wheels connected with a axle in between, you kick the lower wheel to turn the upper wheel, the "potters wheel" is a wheel/plate where you put clay to form with your hands and a few tools, you can make many kinds of vessels like bowls, cups, plates, vases, pitchers, etc.

Here is some excerpts and the sites to help you: In pottery, a potter's wheel is a machine used in the shaping of round ceramic wares. The wheel may also be used during the process of trimming excess body from dried wares and for applying incised decoration or rings of colour. Use of the potter's wheel became widespread throughout the Old World, but was unknown in the Pre-Columbian New World, where pottery was hand-made by methods that included coiling and beating. The potter's wheel may occasionally be referred to as a "potter's lathe". However the term is better used for another design of machine that is used for a different shaping process, turning, similar to that used for the shaping of metal and wood articles. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottery_wheel Before centering clay on the potter's wheel, there are a number of steps that should be taken. These preparatory steps will work toward your overall throwing success. * http://pottery.about.com/od/preparetothrow/tp/beforethrow.htm

This process is called "throwing". When you throw a pot on the wheel, you spin it under your hands.
