It should be safe on a secure site, but it is always best to use a credit card. If there are any fraudulent charges you can dispute them and get them reversed. With a debit card you are on your own, and once they have your information they can wipe out your checking account. I had $2500 in fraudulent credit card charges reversed in Jamaica a couple years ago. I would have been in big trouble if they got my debit card info.
If your debit card has a CVV number on the back side of the card, just below the magnetic strip and after the signature patch, you can use your debit card online.
