One common thing that you will find in all writing groups and/or writing classes, is that you will hear people tell you, "Show me, don't tell me." It's your job as the writer of whatever piece you're working on to make the reader feel and see what you are writing. The amount of adjectives and/or describing you can do all depends on what you're writing. If you are writing flash fiction, you're limited to 100 words or less, which can be difficult. If you're writing a novel, obviously a much larger work so you can describe more.
A good piece of advice I can give you is to always have a dictionary close to you, as well as a thesaurus. They are indispensable tools that will help you. I find myself when I'm bored, reading a dictionary and forever expounding my vocabulary.
But I shall now give you two examples, which most likely will not be perfect, but may give you a good idea. One will be without good description, the other with good description. Remember describe everything. Describe every sense. (i.e. sight, sound, etc.)
1) "My heart pounded as I grabbed the door-knob."
2) "My heart pounded like a jack-hammer in my chest as I forced my clammy hand upon the stark cold brass door-knob."
In this example, I described, with an analogy, how the character's heart was beating. Then, the reader can infer the character is struggling and scared with the description of 'forcing my clammy hand'. I finished the sentence by describing the door-knob, which I used two senses, sight and touch. WHAT kind of door-knob, a BRASS one, and how did it FEEL, COLD.
Adjectives are very useful and can be used eloquently and verbosely, or to go for the opposite effect, they can be used stringently. But find a way that works for your particular writing style. And remember by no means is my example perfect, but I hope it helps you in seeing what effect adjectives and using the senses can do to make a good descriptive sentence.
