In Sweden, Christmas is celebrated on the 24th of December. Most people spend the day with their relatives and loved ones and eat "julbord". In the evening, one (usually a family member) dresses up as Santa Claus and gives people their presents from a large bag.

(Some people think Swedes celebrate Saint Lucia instead of christmas. They celebrate Saint Lucia too, but that's on the 13th of December.)

In Sweden, Christmas decorating usually begins on Advent. Windows are decorated with electric candles and stars. They are seen in businesses, homes, hospitals, and schools. Most families hang an Advent calendar, opening one door each day. On Christmas Eve, families gather round and decorate the tree with candles, items made out of straw, Christmas bulbs, tinsel, paper flags and other trinkets, and top the tree with a gold or silver star.

An important part of the Christmas time celebrations in Sweden is Saint Lucia's day on December 13th. St. Lucia was a young girl who was martyred for her faith in 304 AD. She lived in Rome and would wear candles on her head to leave her hands free to deliver food in secret to persecuted Christians. However, St. Lucia's day was overlaid on the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, which was on December 13 in the old Julian calendar and was a festival of lights.

A Christmas tree isn't brought inside until a couple of days before Christmas. It is decorated with gaily wrapped sweets, lights, glass ornaments and straw trinkets. Their main celebration is on Christmas Eve with a Swedish 'smorgasbord' feast that includes such good things as ham, pigs feet, fish, pork ribs, red cabbage and matchstick potatoes layered with cream, onions and anchovies, sweet pastries, wine and coffee. Swedish coffee is delicious and strong. Also included in the feast is rice porridge flavored with cinnamon, cream and sugar. Whoever finds a whole almond in their porridge is expected to be married within the coming year.

Gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve and Swedes attend church early Christmas morning. The festivities continue on through January 14th, Knut's Day, when the tree is dismantled and the sweets are all eaten.

Because for a long time Sweden had a large Christian population along with most other European nations. As Christmas is a Christian holiday most people there would have celebrated it, even though Sweden has a low religious population in almost every european country it has become apart of culture. But of course they do celebrate it differently quite a bit, and in very unique ways that link up with their old Norse holiday Jul or also known as Yule.
