Control rods need to contain material that is a strong absorber of neutrons, so that rapid shutdown can be achieved when necessary. Two such materials are Cadmium and Boron. Both have been used in different types of reactor. The elements may be used as alloys or as chemical compounds, and will be encased in stainless steel to avoid corrosion in the reactor.

Control rods absorb neutrons, reducing the reactor's neutron flux. As the neutron flux declines the fission rate drops. As the fission rate drops the reactor's thermal power drops and its temperature drops.

Remove control rods undoes all that.

They are the "valve" that the operators use to adjust reactor power generation.

They are made of materials that are good at absorbing neutrons, such as boron. They can be lowered into a nuclear reactor to slow or stop the reaction, for example they are designed to drop in automatically if the reactor overheats. They can also be used to speed up the reaction if they are raised.

The reason they can slow or speed up a nuclear reaction is because in nuclear reactions a fuel such as uranium or plutonium undergoes nuclear fission. Nuclear fission is where the nucleus of an atom splits. This can happen in spontaneous fission, but in nuclear reactors it happens in neutron-induced fission. In neutron-induced fission, a neutron is fired at an unstable nucleus, such as that of uranium, which is unstable because it has too much energy and mass. The fired neutron adds to the excess of energy and mass, so it makes the nucleus even more unstable. As a result, the nucleus splits releasing energy, and products are two smaller daughter nuclei, gamma radiation, and two or more neutrons. These two or more neutrons can then go off to add excess mass and energy to more nuclei, causing more nuclei to split - this is a chain reaction. Therefore, the control rods work by absorbing these neutrons so that the reaction doesn't go out of control which would result in a nuclear bomb. The idea is that to keep the reaction going at a steady rate, an average of one neutron resulting form a fission should go on to cause another fission.

The control rods in a nuclear reactor are made of neutron-absorbing material and are used to start a nuclear reactor (by pulling them out), control a reactor (by pulling them enough to set an "operating point" in the core), and to shut the reactor down (by driving or dropping them into the core).

Carbon rods are used. Boron-10 is particularly good, so sometimes boron carbide made from boron-10 is used. Hafnium is used where it can be afforded.

How does the control rod affect the rate of reaction in the nuclear reactor?

A control rod is made of a neutron absorbing material. Boron is common. When the control rod is withdrawn (pulled out) of the reactor, the fission reaction rate increases. When that control rod is inserted, the reaction rate decreases. There are other factors that control the reaction rate, but the rods can be considered as the way to start up or shut down the reactor by pulling or inserting them.

What kind of rod can be charged by rubbing it with a duster?

Traditionally an amber rod, but a toothbrush handle or a comb will also work.

Is a control rod in nuclear reactor a hollow tube?

Varies. A hollow control rod can act as a "neutron trap." The moderator in the hollow center helps slow the fast neutrons into the thermal region for increased absorption by the surrounding absorbing material such as Boron.

Is a rod and a link the same thing?

I would say the term Control Rod and Control Link are the same. Fixed controls can be designed with different types of rods or tubes and different types of joints where they connect. The term "link" usually describe the entire control mechanism. This could include bell cranks that transmit rotational motion. A rod end is usually a solid steel fitting that has a mono-ball bearing and this rod end is fitted into a hollow tube. Some hollow links are just flattened and hole drilled in it to made a swivel joint. But they still could either be called a rod or link.

What would happen if a lighting rod were made of an insulation material rather than conducting material?

Such a rod would not be a lightning rod. It would not attract lightning and would not work as a lightning rod. In fact, it would do nothing but stand up and occupy space.

What is the stell rod attached to the lower control arm that supports the weight of the vehicle by using a twisting action?

The steel rod attached to the lower control arm that supports the weight of the vehicle, is called a bushing. There are several of these in a vehicle and without them, it would not work properly.

How do you replace tailgate door handle on 1997 ford escort wagon?

Remove the tailgate trim panel. Disconnect the remote control rod from the remote control. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Unbolt the latch and remove the remote control. Disconnect the lock knob rod from the remote control and remove the rod. Disconnect the lock cylinder rod from the lock cylinder. Unbolt the remote control and remove it from the liftgate. Remove 2 nuts that hold the outside handle and take it out of the liftgate. Installation is the reverse of the removal steps.
