How weather forecast helps a farmer?

Weather can improve the bounty of the crops with a good amount of rain and sunshine to ripen certain produce or it can kill the crops by flooding the crops causing the soil to not be able to take in the water and possibly dis-root the plants or not get enough water in a drought and cause them to die. It can also have spring freezes and cause the plants to die by freezing the water in the chloroplasts causing them to ice over, the plant to not be able to make glucose through photosynthesis therefore the plant dies. Seemingly It governs the farmer and dictates the money flow and amount of produce and what they have in the next seasons.

A warning of bad weather within a day or so [eg a "Grazier's Alert"] warning of wind and rain to come means that he has time to move lambs and newly-shorn sheep so they don't get wet and die of exposure.

At the other extreme, an "El Nino" forecast, or a "Long Range Weather Forecast" for years ahead, can:-

- help a farmer or grazier to diversify his crops or livestock to more suitable ones of the same type, or pick completely new ones [eg Soy or Canola instead of wheat, or camels instead of cattle),

- aim for different markets [eg change from ordinary wheat for bread to 'hard' wheat for the pasta market], or

-decide to cut the losses and sell the family farm if the outlook is grim.

Farmers need to know the weather in advance so they can plan their work; for instance, whether it will be a good day to harvest (if its sunny) or whether their crops could be ruined (by storm, flood, hurricane, etc.) or whether freshly planted crops will get enough water from rain. If not they might have to water them by irrigation.

A large part of accurate crop forecasting is quite simply the farmer's experience and knowledge of his soil types, cropping history, agronomic practices, and weather patterns. This allows him to get sort of a "gut feeling" of how well the crop is doing. He also can use soil and tissue testing done by a laboratory to confirm his suspicions. Finally, he can also measure out specific areas of the field and count ears of corn, soybean pods, wheat heads, green tomatoes, small apples, or whatever the crop is to get a good feeling of what his final yield might be. Crop forecasting is virtually never 100% accurate, though.
