Snakes can be killed many different ways. Such as, being eaten by other animals. Hawks, herons, egrets, owls, foxes, and other predators hunt for snakes. Or a snake can just basically die from old age.

They follow the scent trail of the prey, and when they find it, swallow it whole. It is much more safe and efficient for the snake to kill this way, than to risk possible injury by fighting with the prey.

Rattlesnakes can die by being attacked and eaten by predators, including hawks, eagles, crows, ravens, roadrunners, weasels, skunks, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, etc. Many are killed when crossing roads due to vehicles. Many are killed by ignorant humans who think there is no good snake but a dead snake. In particularly extensive droughts, many will die of starvation as most prey items have disappeared.

It depends on what is causing the death of the snake. If it is being attacked by a predator, it will fight until death. Even after death the head is still capable of delivering a venomous bite for some time. If it is dying of old age or disease, it will just calmly lie there waiting for the end to come.
