A river changes its flow pattern as it goes downstream.

The water discharge of the river going downstream increases because the tributaries (streams, smaller rivers) join in to form a massive river that can range from a few feet to miles wide.

The efficiency of the river flow decreases because the water from other sources join in, thus mixing in pollution and other fishes that thrive the area.

The friction of the water increases because of the movement of the water that joins together, thus producing more current and energy for the water to flow downstream.

First a stream starts off as a young stream and young streams flow through steep valleys, rapids, and waterfalls. Then, young streams change into mature streams which flow through gentler terrain and have less energy. Lastly, mature streams change into old streams which flow slowly and are often wide and snake back and forth across their floodplains.

Explain the processes of headward erosion and stream piracy?

Headward erosion is a fluvial process of erosion that lengthens a stream, a valley or a gully at its head and also enlarges its drainage basin. The stream erodes away at the rock and soil at its headwaters in the opposite direction that it flows. Once a stream has begun to cut back, the erosion is sped up by the steep gradient the water is flowing down. As water erodes a path from its headwaters to its mouth at a standing body of water, it tries to cut an ever-shallower path. This leads to increased erosion at the steepest parts, which is headward erosion. (wikipedia)When this happens, the erosion can break through into another stream and the water from the stream is diverted. So the stream is "stealing" the other stream's water.
