No paper towels, sanitary pads, rags, cigarette butts or styrofoam of any kind. No high concentrations of bleach or pipe cleaning liquids. Get a filter and install (or have it installed) at the outlet to field. clean this filter every 2-3 months.

Septic tanks take in all the waste water from a house. This flows into a tank about 4x4 feet, 6-8 feet long. The heavier sludge falls to the bottom and black water separates to the top where it can run through a tube or over a wall to the next chamber to be pumped or drain into the septic field where it leaches into the ground. In the primary tank, microbes work on the main deposits, consuming organic waste, the remains of which then form a kind of mattress of slower dissolving floating matter. If the aerobic action is encouraged the microbes eventually consume everything leaving only black water.

Homes on septic tanks must be very careful about what goes down the kitchen sink or toilet. No chemicals such as bleach or cleaning fluids, grease, no cigarette butts, feminine pads, band aids, paper towels, styrofoam cups, Q tips or any other solids can be allowed as the bacteria cannot easily consume these. Some products are sold that encourage microbial activity and I know many farming people who regularly flush poultry entrails that help.

Septic tanks use gravity to separate solid waste from water, and then use bacterial activity to break down the solids at the bottom (called sludge). When you flush a toilet or take a shower, the waste water flows into the septic tank. Once in the tank, the solids settle to the bottom, and the water (when it's relatively free of particulates) enters and outlet tube where it flows into a drain field. The sludge at the bottom of the tank decomposes as bacterial colonies break down the matter into simpler components until the tank is cleaned (usually once every 3 years).

Firstly, make a plan about where and how big the septic tank will be. The area where you plan should have sufficient dry land for the drain field.

Next part would be to give in some time for research on septic systems in your city. You would need a member of the community board to inspect your septic tank design to have it approved. It should outline all structures found on your property, plants, rooms, fences, poles and power Transformers along with the design of the septic tank itself.

Dig a test pit and then you can inspect so that the soild could be tested.

Once all regulatory aspects have been taken care, then you can proceed to excavate the area with a backhoe. Also, examine the excavation to make sure it is done in accordance to the original plan.

Setup the, distribution box, the tank and the drain field in accordance to the regulations of your community. In order to do this, youwould have to use sand and stones to cover the base of the excavated area then install the tank, distribution box and drain field according to how it is sketched in the plan.

Once everything is done, attach the new septic tank to the Plumbing system. Finally do a test run to make sure it is properly installed.

For a house of 2 -3 people, you need a tank in the ground that is at least 4x4x4 and does not leak. Make the tank 25 % bigger for each additional person . It needs an input hole to take 4 inch pipe and an outlet hole on the other side at same height, with a protective barrier or wall around it extending down to one foot from the bottom (so 'solids' won't flow directly out) It must have a solid top surface that can be removed for maintenance. The outlet pipe should extend out at least 20 feet to a separation box at least 2 feet underground, where it goes into 2-4 pipes, each 40-50 feet long, with holes to leach out the grey water. -This is a very basic system.

If it is a closed system the septic tank holds the waste water until it is collected.

In an infiltration system, the waste water goes into the tank where the solids settle to the bottom and the liquid portion flows through a gravel bed and into the surrounding earth.

A septic tank is simply a big concrete or steel tank that is buried in the yard. The tank might hold 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters) of water. Wastewater flows into the tank at one end and leaves the tank at the other. The tank looks something like this in cross-section:

In this picture, you can see three layers. Anything that floats rises to the top and forms a layer known as the scum layer. Anything heavier than water sinks to form the sludge layer. In the middle is a fairly clear water layer. This body of water contains bacteria and chemicals like nitrogen and phosphorous that act as fertilizers, but it is largely free of solids.

Wastewater comes into the septic tank from the sewer pipes in the house, as shown here:

A septic tank naturally produces gases (caused by bacteria breaking down the organic material in the wastewater), and these gases don't smell good. A septic system is normally powered by nothing but gravity. Water flows down from the house to the tank, and down from the tank to the drain field. It is a completely passive system.
