Machines NEVER change the amount of work done

What a machine changes is the FORCE required to perform the work, usually by increasing the displacement over which the work is being done. Work equals Force times Distance (W=Fd). Since work doesn't change (remains constant), then displacment must be increased in order to decrease the force (you can see from the work equation that force and displacement are inversely proportional).

If you want to lift a 10kg object a height of 1 meter, you will do the same amount of work lifting it straight up with your knees as you would do by using a simple machine such as a ramp. The machine will help you lift the object, but you will at the very least do the same amount of work. See how using a ramp increases the distance the 10kg mass travels to reach the height of 1 meter? Increasing the displacement decreases the required force.

An ideal machine will allow you to do the same amount of work. A non-ideal machine will increase the amount of work you do.
