How it functions? I'm going to assume you meant- "what it does".

A Tsunami (it is Japanese, so you pronounce it as so) are caused by a number of things; earthquakes, meteors or underwater disturbances. It is essentially a series of huge waves. (Starting fairly large, increasing to a devastating size.)

It is not to be confused with tidal waves though.

A Tsunami starts when a huge amount of water is shifted quickly. The waves also push water onto shore, causing what is called a "runup", which is extremely destructive.

Tsunami's are extremely rare, so not every wave after a recent earthquake will be the start of a Tsunami, and landslides rarely cause them.

Tsunamis can travel over 600 miles per hour, crossing an ocean in a few short hours. They are absolutely deadly and aren't to be messed with.

Imagine throwing a car into a swimming pool. Yep. (Assuming you can throw a car? maybe get a fork-lift?) If you are not able to throw a car, just drop a small object into a bowl instead. It's still the same effect, just smaller scale. (You can also slosh the bowl around and let the water jump out over the sides, this will produce a bowl-sized Tsunami.)

It doesn't really 'function', in my opinion, because functioning is more a word for the living. Thankfully, Tsunami's are not alive, otherwise we would have giant waves running around. Literally.

So, to directly answer your question; a Tsunami is not one, but several waves acting as figurative wrecking balls on anything in its path. Underwater, the earths crust can crack and seperate one side acting like -a paddle, if you will- and starts the waves. (This won't always generate a Tsunami, but its pretty effective.)

I hope that answered your question, this is really all I know about them, and I'm not an expert.

(Please do not use this and claim it as your own, it came from my brain, so its brain-copyrighted. Thank you.)

A tsunami starts by undersea earthquakes, undersea landslides, landing sliding into the ocean, or volcanic eruptions or even asteroid impacts.
