Arthritis affects the joints in the musculo-skeletal system. Primarily, the cartilage and other tissue of the joint gets inflamed and often even worn down or obliterated (in osteoarthritis, the most common type) from motion without the cushion of the cartilage allowing bone-on-bone contact, and in late stages even the bone can be destroyed.

In other types of arthritisother body systems are involved, e.g., Psoriatic arthritis is associated with the skin disorder psoriasis, whereas a Rheumatic arthritis (an autoimmune disorder) can involve skin, lungs, heart and kidneys. A septic (infected) arthritis will mainly stay in the joint, however a systemic spread of the pathogen is possible and can cause a septicemia (blood poisoning).
