Overall, the US has the highest rate of gun crime in the developed world, as the wide availability of firearms leads to them inevitably falling into the hands of criminals and the mentally ill (although about 1/2 of gun related deaths are suicides). On a more local level, allowing weapons to be carried has a debateable chance of reducing crime because criminals will be more wary of attacking someone.

∙ 14y agoCarrying weapons while in commission of a crime can massively increase the offence, for example from simple burglary to an armed robbery (whether or not the weapon was brandished or the person robbed even knew of its presence). It can also result in an additional charge of carrying weapons illegally or for an illegal purpose (not the official wording, but that is what you did).
Additionally, some states have what's known as Project Exile, where the presence of a weapon during a felony arrest, whether it is used or not, carries with it a minimum sentencing requirement (typically, five years) on top of the sentences for charges filed in relation to whatever the arrest was for.

Yes, because almost every person in the world who would commit a crime yowled not abide to laws that restrict gun wrights. If a criminal would commit a crime, they obviously would not care about laws that do not allow them to have guns. People who have guns for self defense can defend themselves. If there are laws against owning guns, then innocent people would be unable to defend themselves, meanwhile a criminal would have a gun.

No. Stricter laws for owing a gun does nothing to stop crime or to keep criminals from buying guns since by definition, criminals don't buy guns legally. Maybe the debate should be extended to crazed psychopaths with guns? Obviously the laws need changing.

There will be different opinions from different experts. One opinion (mine) is that there are over 2,000 gun control laws now on the books at City, State and National levels- and for the most part, they do not work. They only affect people that obey laws. People that ignore laws about robbery, kidnapping, murder and assault will also ignore laws about guns. What HAS been noted in that in areas where private ownership of guns has increased, levels of violent crime has DECREASED.

OK- word is strict. Your question calls for an opinion. Here is my opinion- there are several thousand national, state and local gun laws in the US. In some cases, the people that made the laws do not even understand the wording in the law they passed. Many of the gun laws do not affect criminals, since they do not obey laws- but they do affect law abiding people. Violent crime- including crimes involving guns- is at the lowest rate in years. At the same time, gun ownership has gone up. Laws that prevent honest people from being able to have a gun only takes away their ability to defend themselves from crime.

The most important would be around carrying guns or ammunition. If you are found in possession of any of these without the required permit, you can be thrown in jail for years.

The result is that laws mainly affect honest people that do not break the law. Several countries have effectively banned private ownership of guns, in the belief that it would reduce crime. However, they have since found that crime rates INCREASE after such a ban, since law abiding persons now have lost the ability to defend themselves.
