How does gravity affect us?

Slightly increased gravity would make the body feel heavier and clumsy. Stronger gravity would prevent us from being able to stand upright and make breathing difficult. Strain on the internal organs would eventually cause death. Very strong gravity would quickly crush us to death.

Gravity affects us in space because it prevents us from traveling in straight lines. Earth's gravity affects spacecraft and probes far beyond earth's atmosphere; if this were not so, the moon would not be orbitting the earth (it orbits the earth because of earth's gravity pulling it toward the earth, while its own momentum is trying to move it away in a straight line). The sun's gravity does the same thing to affect the earth, and the farther we would get from Earth in a spacecraft, the more the sun would become a more dominant gravitational influence. A gravitationally significant object, such as a large moon, a planet or a sun, constantly pulls on all other objects.

Astronauts appear weightless when in orbit of Earth, despite still being within the Earth's gravitational influence, because they are in freefall. The spacecraft they are in "fall" with the people and objects within the spacecraft over the horizon.
