Best Answer

A combination of many factors, including: Sunlight, adequate soil temperature, soil microbes, moisture, and disturbance. Disturbance is particularly needed to encourage grass growth before the grass has had a chance to put up a seed head and then go into dormancy.

Grass must reproduce as does all plants in order for it to grow and multiply. Initially grass is planted from some type of seedling. One this seed germinates and forms a plant it is normally planted in the ground or maybe even in your yard. The roots of the grass will produce long runners upon with more grass shoots are formed. This continues until the entire area is covered.

A combination of factors encourages grass growth:

  • Sunlight
  • Soil moisture levels
  • Ambient air temperature
  • Soil microbes (fungi, bacteria, etc.)
  • Soil temperature (optimum for type of grass [C3s or C4s])
  • Root/crown energy reserves with in the grass plant or seed
  • Soil nutrients (to some extent)
  • Photoperiod length (or growing degree days)
  • Disturbances (mowing, grazing, even fire) usually prior to maturity

Mowing and grazing also encourages grass to grow because grass, as a plant with the goal to produce seeds to spread around before it dies or goes into dormancy, has the adaptation to regrow after being eaten to try to set seed as soon as possible before the next freeze-up or dry period. When a dry spell or freezing winters occur, the grass is forced into dormancy where it sits and waits for the right moment to commence growth again.

If grass were allowed to continue growth without being cut or grazed, it would put up these seed heads and go dormant after the seed heads have flowered and matured into seeds. New growth wouldn't come until some form of signal, by way of day length, heat period, or moisture encourages new growth again. In the grazing world, regrowth is encouraged by letting animals to graze plants when they are almost ready to put up a seed head.

How will acid rain effect grass compared with fresh water?

acid rain does not kill, but it can lower the pH of the soil the grass is in. this can release more nutrients, making the grass grow better. Some parts of acid rain is also a scarce plant nutrient (NO3) that makes your grass grow even better.
