Oxygen binds with the iron atoms of hemoglobin molecules while carbon dioxide bonds with the amino groups of these molecules. Because oxygen and carbon dioxide do not directly compete for binding sites, hemoglobin molecules can transport both at the same time.

oxygen binds to haem(iron) part of haemoglobin while carbon dioxide binds to the globin(protein) part so they can't compete they can be transported at the same time but not in the same vessels , oxygen in artey while carbon dioxide in veins except on pulmonary vessel.

Hb as a rule does ot carry much co2....most co2 produced in the cells diffuses into the plasma and is carried back to the lungs

They're not. Hemoglobin is involved in O2 transport only, CO2 is carried as carbonic acid.
