Durg abuse supports a fairly large segment of the economy: law enforcement, international efforts, large government bureaucracies like DEA, the law enforcement equipment industry, the legal industry and the prison industry. This "War on Drugs" funnels billions of dollars into a broad variety of industries and agencies that would otherwise be unable to justify their existence. That is why there is a war, instead of organized, mandatory treatment for addicts. It is also why we do not have legalized drugs -- except for alcohol, the worst one of all, and its little buddy nicotine.

Drug abuse has many effects on the US economy. Drug users buy illegal substances that are not regulated, keeping illegal drug dealers in business. Individuals that are drug users also drain the economy by requiring all of the substance abuse programs that are sponsored by the government. Methadone programs and addiction counseling are examples of government funded programs. These drug users also contribute to the rising costs of healthcare.
