All physical therapy degrees in the US to my knowledge are now post-graduate degrees. This means that graduating from an accredited program through The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) will earn you either a Masters or Doctoral degree. Many therapists choose to study undergraduate programs before applying that will align well with a physical therapy degree for example, Exercise and Sports Science, Exercise Physiology and Athletic Training. Furthermore, a person interested in pediatric physical therapy might choose to earn an undergraduate degree in areas such as Human Development or Special Education. There are tens of programs across the United States and a complete list can be found at: http://www.univsource.com/pt.htm Best regards, Michael J. Workman PT professionaltherapies.com
There are 10 accredited schools in the state of Tennessee that offer degrees in Physical Therapy. To become a physical therapist you must receive a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree as well as pass the state licensing test. This is usually a three year program after you complete the undergraduate degree.
You must obtain a bachelors degree and take prerequisite coursework prior to applying for physical therapy school, which is now generally a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Physical Therapist Assistants are a 2 year associates degree which may be commenced after high school.
Individuals who pursue a graduate degree in physical therapy come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds. The important issue is completion of the appropriate prerequisite coursework. Among the undergraduate courses that are useful when one applies to a physical therapist education program are anatomy, biology, chemistry, social science, mathematics, and physics. Before granting admission, many programs require volunteer experience in the physical therapy department of a hospital or clinic.
There are many places where you can find physical therapy scholarships. Contact the college(s) where you are applying. Check with your school counselor. The ACT is typically used for undergraduate admissions. However, it is rarely required. If submitting the ACT, most institutions require you to submit the writing portion with it. However, ACT is not used for graduate admissions which is what a degree in physical therapy is. Today, the minimum requirement for a physical therapist is a master's degree in physical therapy, which may change to a doctorate in the near future.
Years ago, the educational requirement for a physical therapist was a bachelors degree. As I understand it at present, most colleges and universities have know made it a masters, and - if not already - will soon make it a doctorate. Still, I will place a link under the related links section indicated below (College Board) where you can research institutions that offer physical therapy as a program of study, and understand their degree requirement for this field of study.
