Why does the performance of transition lenss in glasses degrade with time and can I do anything to avoid or reduce this effect?

Transitions lenses are embedded with microcrystalline silver halides. The silver halide reacts with the ultra violet light produced by the sun and this causes the lense to become darker. Unfortunatly over time the silver halides will begin to fade much like and poster would sitting by a window being constantly hit by the sun. There isn't really anything you can do to prevent this, things wear out its just the way of life.
