Most mosses are harmless, but Spanish Moss can be destructive. It blocks the light, slowing the growth of the tree, and it weighs down the branches and can cause them to break. Over a long period of time, it can weaken the tree and expose it to insects and disease, ultimately killing the tree. Many people think it's beautiful, but, because of its destructive nature, some Southerners look upon Spanish Moss with almost as much contempt as Kudzu.
