The sound is muffled because in the air the air vibrations travel to the eardrums and that wont work under water vibrations travel through your bones.

Also you cant tell were the sound is coming from because both ears will hear a sound simotaineusly as apposed to the air where your brain can tell which ear it hit first

Water being denser the speed of sound is much higher. When something vibrates (like a voice box or a guitar string) it makes atoms bump into each other making a sound wave. Because water is so much denser than air the atoms don't have to travel as far to bump into each other. Sound travels at about 335 meters per second through air and about 1500 meters per second through water.

Sound travels approximately 5 times the speed underwater than in air. In air, the speed of sound is about 334 meters per second, while its speed underwater is 1,500 meters per second.

By sizzlersats- And see, liquid molecules are more closer than molecules of air...that is the reason.

Speed of sound in water is c = 1480 m/s. It is affected by the oceanographic variables of temperature, salinity, and pressure.

Speed of sound in air is c = 343 m/s at 20°C = 68°F. The speed of sound changes clearly with temperature, a little bit with humidity - but not with air pressure (atmospheric pressure).

Speed of sound in water is faster than in air.

The speed of sound is different compared to air because the particles in the air are bigger and closer to the air x i think
