Here are some examples of using technology to bully others.

1. Computer hacking - Someone may hack into computers to dig up dirt on people to use as fodder to bully or extort them.

2. Flaming someone online - That means posting derogatory or inciting messages about a person.

3. Hacking into someone's phone - Someone may hack into someone else's phone as a part of bullying or stalking.

4. Posting altered photos of someone - Someone may take photo editing software and create fake photos of another person to make it look like they are doing something immoral, sexual, or illegal. Some may even convert the photos to videos.

5. Inciting others to violence against someone - This is often done using social networks.

Technology makes bullying easier. In the past, a bully would have to catch their victim at school or in public to torment them. Sure, they could send poison pen letters, but they lacked the discipline to wait that long. So that meant it was mostly teasing and physical contact. Now, a bully doesn't even have to be at school, let alone even enrolled. So even the hypothetical student who was expelled the other month for drugs or weapons can bully and seek revenge online or via the phone or SMS without stepping foot onto school property.

Technology also makes it easier to impersonate people, set people up to become victims, or plant evidence on people. It is nothing to take a photo of someone and attach the person's head to the body in another photo of someone doing something illegal, immoral, or otherwise inappropriate. Then just text the photo to friends or include it into a video. A bully could record someone's words and splice segments from different recordings to make them say something else.

There have been two real documented accounts of angry former boyfriends or spouses impersonating their former lovers and claiming to have a fetish for a certain type of crime being doing to them. That scenario was also covered as fiction in a popular crime show. In both real life situations, all the men involved were arrested - both the former lovers and the 3rd party guys who honestly thought they were fulfilling a consensual wish when committing the crime they were requested to commit.

Things such as anonymous proxies also contribute to cyberbullying. The bully could live next door to their target, yet show an IP address of being in Another Country. Some sites are using proxy detection and blacklists to prevent this. Topix, a well-known news aggregation site with pages for nearly every geographic location, tends to block anonymous proxies in an attempt to reduce cyberbullying.

How ofen is cyberbullying an issue?

In today's day and age, cyberbullying is an issue that turns up almost daily. However, this problem of cyberbullying is silent and rarely addressed. That needs to change. With technology becoming more available to kids, bullying on the schoolyard is a thing of the past. Why would a child risk being caught teasing on the playground when they can hide behind a computer screen? The issue is not technology, but of teaching children how to handle it while maintaining a respectful outlook toward peers. Educating children to the many forms of technology that are readily available is the first step toward solving the issue of cyberbullying. Only then will we be looking toward solving this silent problem that we call cyberbullying.
