The Calliergon giganteum (Artic Moss) grows in the arctic tundra. It grows on and around the bottom of tundra lake beds and in and around bogs and fens.

The Arctic Moss has adapted well to its cold climate. Here are a few facts about some of its adaptations:

  • It is very slow growing, growing as slow as one centimeter per year. When it is not growing, it stores nutrients so new leaves can be made quickly next spring.
  • It also lives a very long time; the shoots can live between seven and nine years, the leaves can live up to four.
  • Its branches are crowded; the more leaves on the branches the more they can photosynthesize.
  • It is adapted to the incredibly strong winds because it grows near to the ground or underwater.
  • Because it can grow under water it is protected from the drying winds and cold, dry air of the frozen tundra.

· TThey can either reproduce by growing shoots or by sending out spores, which need to be wet to survive.

  • Here are some unique facts about all moss:
  • They have rhizoids (tiny rootlets) instead of roots. They never have wood stems.
  • They have tiny leaves, usually only one cell thick. There are lots of leaves on the stem.

What is Freak Weather Conditions?

Freak Weather Conditions (or Extreme Weather Conditions) are when weather conditions that are unusually severe occur. It could also apply to weather conditions that are unusual for the part of the world they occur in, or the time of year they occur at. For example, a large tornado that causes a lot of damage would be a Freak Weather Condition for England, because we don't tend to get many tornadoes here, and those that we do get rarely get more severe than an F2.
