It is lunar calendar that is composed of 12 lunar months totaling 354 or 355 days. The starting of this Calendar is marked by the Prophet Muhammad Immigration (Hijra in Arabic) from Mecca (Makkah) to Medina (both cities are currently in Saudi Arabia) in year around 622 AD (Georgian Calendar). That is why the Islamic Calendar is called also Hijra Calendar.

  • Islamic calendar is Lunar system Calendar. Christian calendar is solar system calendar.
  • the zero date of Islamic calendar marks the event of migration (Hijra) of prophet Muhammad from Mecca (or Makkah) to Medina (or Madinah) in Saudi Arabia when informed by God that the unbelievers in Mecca planned to assasinate him.The zero date of the Christian Calendar, basically marks the birth Jesus.

Additional Comments:

The Islamic calendar is lunar only, which means it is based on the phases of the moon. It is 354-355 days long.

The Jewish calendar is lunisolar, which is a combination of the lunar calendar and the solar calendar (January, February, etc.). That is, it is based on the phases of the moon, like the Islamic calendar, but a lunar month is added every two or three years so that it keeps up with the solar calendar. This serves to keep Passover in the spring time, instead of moving around as it would with a lunar calendar (Jews believe that Passover must be observed in the spring).

How does the Islamic calendar compare to the Georgian calendar?

The Islamic calendar month only has 28 days, where as the Georgian calendar month varies between 28 and 31 days (depending on the month). This means that the Islamic calendar is shorter than the Georgian calendar by approximately 11 days every year. For this reason Islamic religious evens such as the Holy month of Ramadan, migrate forward each year by about 11 days. Christian religious events tend to remain on the same day of the Georgian calendar each year (or within a few days).
