The Missouri Compromise's latitudinal division of the United States had become a barrier to the spirit of Manifest Destiny due to sectional hostilities. Texas, tried to get annexed for nine years, but had failed due to it allowing slaves in the state. With new western territories opening up, southerners in particular believed the compromise was holding back their vision of Manifest Destiny.
