  • The cytoplasm:nucleus ratio is higher - the cytoplasmic content is higher since the egg cell provides most of the cellular matter for the zygote. The sperm only contributes the nuclear material.
  • Egg cells don't have centrioles which are necessary for cell division - it is provided by the sperm. This is perhaps so that the egg cell cannot be fertilized with another egg cell.
  • Egg cells also have higher number of mitochondria since they provide the mitochondrial matter for the zygote.
