The somatic nervous system controls the voluntary movement of skeletal muscles, such as when you move your arm.

The autonomic nervous systems controls the involuntary actions of internal organs and glands. The beating of your heart is controlled by this system. The autonomic nervous system is further broken up into two parts: the sympathetic, which controls arousal (think fight-or-flight), and the parasympathetic, which controls calming (think rest and digest).

The sympathetic nervous system is a part of the autonomic nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system consists of:

- the sympathetic nervous system (fright, flight, fight reflex)

- the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest)

- the enteric nervous system (control of gastrointestinal processes)

The Somatic NS sends motor commands within the efferent division of the spinal cord to skeletal muscles (effector). The Autonomic NS sends motor commands through the same efferent division to smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands (effectors) via either the sympathetic or parasympathetic division.
