It releases a set amount of each water, hot and cold, depending on what the user selects with the handles. One piece units are not as accurate as two handle system; advanced and modern thermostatic mixers start with hot water than add cold water until the predetermined temperature is reached.

The EPR valve should work reguardless of if the TXV is in the air stream. The TXV in the airflow shouldn't make it act any different since it is sensing the temperature at the bulb instead of at the valve it's self.

A trim kit is just the outside parts that you see. This will make you faucet look better, but it wont affect the function of your old valve. If your shower valve doesn't work right, replace it.
