Lightning causes thunder when weather conditions cause an electrical charge in the earths atmosphere to ground to the earth. The charge breaks the sound barrier, displacing the air. When the air collides back together it produces thunder.

When it has intensified enough, water droplets rub together in the cloud to make static electricity. This static electricity mus be discharged through lightning and this is what causes a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms can produce winds, hail and tornadoes.
