It depends on the type of plane. Small, one-engine propeller planes (reciprocating engines) fly at speeds of 80 to 200 mph (130 to 320 km/hr). Jet airliners at cruising altitude average around 500 to 600 mph (800 to 960 km/hr). Military turboprops cruise at 350 mph (560 km/hr) and jet fighters routine exceed the speed of sound (768 mph or 1235 km/hr at sea level). Because of their lower weight compared to engine power, some private jets travel faster than large passenger jet planes.

There is a whole variety of airplanes, but if you are talking about Jet Airliners, the average speed is about 80% of the speed of sound, in the aviation industry this is called Mach .8. The actual speed the differs from type to type, if you look at the Boeing 747, the maximum speed is mach .85, the Boeing 737 Classic on the other hand has a max of around mach .74. The speed that a mach number relates to differs with altitude, temperature and air density. But in general terms, if a plane flies Mach .8 at 37000 feet, the speed is around 850 km/h, 520 m/h or 450 knots.
