Best Answer

Stock passenger cars of the early 1930s would go up to 50 mph, and some later V-8's and V-12's went over 80 mph. By the end of the 1930s, cars were reaching the modern level of 100 to 120 mph. That became pretty much the designed top speed, which was dangerous enough on older roads.

The Land Speed Record is over 700mph, but this was in a specialist car developed for the attempt. Some road cars available to the general public (at vast cost!) peak at over 150 mph, possibly close to 200mph.
