Plants have some or all of the following adaptations:

  • Thick fleshy leaves to store water
  • Shallow root systems to collect small amounts of moisture
  • Deep root systems to tap into underground water
  • Reflective of light coloured leaves to reflect excessive light
  • Reduced leaves (for example thorns or spines) to reduce transpiration and offer protection
  • Underground water storage organs
  • Flower infrequently and produce large amounts of seed
  • Flowering at night when pollinators are more active

Animals have some or all of the following adaptations:

  • Large ears to dissipate heat more effectively
  • Nocturnal hunters, large ears, good night vision
  • High levels of toxicity (snakes, scorpions) so that prey are immobilized quickly
  • Thick skin coverings (protection from sun and cold)
  • Able to dig well so that they can live below ground
  • Able to effectively store water in their bodies when it is available (eg. camel)

desert animals have many ways to adapt to their desert biome.

1) they have tough skin to keep them from the heat

2) they also have big ears to take to help regulate their body heat

3) for food, many of them eat each other, and some others eat plants

4) for water, they can either drink the water that is stored in plants or they can store water themselves.

very simple, they are adapted in different ways..

plants like cactus :

they have spikes so animals wont eat them

they dont sweat to reduce water loss

they have wide spreaded roots(most plants in deserts) to absorb more water

animal like camels :

they have humps, witch is full of water

ther have loong legs so there not effected as much by the sand

they have a large surface area/ some have small.
