Adaptations of whales to their marine environment are:

  • Young calves swim in the mother's "slip stream", enabling them to keep up.
  • Whales are capable of diving deeply. When they dive, some types of whales have a slower heart rate, while protein molecules such as haemoglobin and myoglobin store oxygen in body tissue, enabling a more energy and oxygen-efficient dive. Also, during a dive, the whale's blood is redirected away from organs and tissues which can tolerate lower oxygen levels, such as the extremities, and firected toward the heart, lungs, and brain, where more oxygen is required.
  • They have a layer of blubber to keep warm in cold temperatures.
  • They have strong pectoral fins to help them steer and they stop with the help of flukes (end of the tail).

Whales have adapted to their environment by have blowholes on the top of their heads. This allows the whale to receive air while preventing water from entering its lungs. The whale has also adapted by shutting off half of their brain in order to rest. This allows the whale to rest but also be aware of their surroundings and predators.

Whales have come a long way since the beginning of time. Their ancestor is guessed to be a weasel-like mammal with fur and claws. Slowly, it mutated until it became a whale. Its paws became larger and elongated, its nostrils have moved up to form a blowhole, it has a streamline body, lost its fur, and gained a layer of blubber for warmth. Most whales now eat krill, unlike their ancestor that ate fish and bird eggs. For more information I suggest a biologic website.
