Spelling is accomplished in two ways: by the memorization of words or by the analysis of the word form and its root languages. In proofreading, you recognize that a word "looks wrong" based on previous visual experience. Words that are unfamiliar may still have recognizable roots, or be similar in form to known words. Spell-checking easily misspelled words (e.g. "millennium") will prevent memorizing them wrong.

It is important because with the many similar words we have in English, a small error in spelling can change the meaning or a sentence, or even make it meaningless.

"He was the daring of the professors" sounds like a bold teacher.

"He was the darling of the professors" tells us he's a student who could be the best in his class, or perhaps more charming than capable. The other sentences will probably clarify that.

You should not count on the readability of "common misspellings" to cover for sloppy writing or editing. Not only is this frowned upon by supervisors and teachers, but could make your writing hard for readers to read, and color their opinion of what you are trying to say. Persuasive writing, especially, needs to be both impeccably written and clearly stated.

Spelling is important in life because if you take important tests like the SAT's, they do grade you on the basic factors like punctuation and spelling on the language arts section.
