Theoretically, if all the world were 'healthy' mentally, it would do away with a great deal of issues presented to society. Thus, it would be terribly helpful to the world if people didn't suffer from debilitating problems that are really all in their head. So, mental health should be a priority for a healthy society because (theoretically), society will not be healthy (and thus able to function to the full extent of its potential, etc.) until the issue of mental illness has been resolved.
Our mental health has to make as important as our physical health. Many mental disorders and illnesses can become physical symptoms if left untreated. If you think you suffer from some kind of MD or MI please see a mental professional.
There is more stigma attached to mental health. Mental illness is wrongly associated with weak character, a lack of willpower, laziness, and in some countries, excess. People can see and understand physical maladies, but not everyone is convinced that mental illnesses exist. Some believe the patients could be making up their symptoms or that they just need to pull themselves together. They blame the pharmaceutical industry and neurotic people with too much time on their hands for making up new diseases. So there is a large denial that mental health problems exist.
Plus there is a problem with stereotypes and urban legends. Some confuse mental illness with being mentally challenged. There are some who erroneously think mental illness is a crime or that being in a treatment facility gives you a police record. So many have negative views of people with mental illness either because of slasher films and other types of Horror movies or because of what they hear on the news. They read headlines such as "Spree Killer Was Off Their Medication," and they assume all mentally ill persons are violent or otherwise dangerous. There are plenty of jokes which denigrate those with mental health problems.
Because it help's us understand our own actions. Mental health can also help us understand others.
