The Northern public greatly resented being treated like unpaid slave-catchers, and the Abolitionists were outraged at the immorality of the Act. Harriet Beecher Stowe was so angry, she wrote 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', which drove the two sides further apart, and brought war closer.
