I worked at Pepsi at the tail end of Kendall's reign. From what I know as fact it was clear that he took a company that was on-again, off-again when it came to sales and profits. He was the one who built the the Pepsi-Frito foundation that would allow Pepsi to weather business environment storms that seem to follow the Pepsi brand. At the time Pepsi was a one beverage company...... he moved to Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew. So if you look at the strict definition, starting something from nothing, Kendall is not the best example but he did see opportunity and had the balls to pull the trigger.
